Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the NC Tortoise Sanctuary!

We are excited that you are interested in serving the needs of the many wonderful

reptiles and amphibians living at the sanctuary .

There are a few things to know before committing to being a volunteer with us.

Please read the information below before filling out the application to be a volunteer.

-All volunteers must adhere to the rules of the sanctuary at all times - no exceptions

-Volunteers must wear appropriate clothing when reporting for a shift:

closed toe shoes, old clothes (they will get dirty), gloves

-Volunteers must attend training prior to beginning regular shifts

-Volunteers must be a minimum of 14 years old

-No smoking/vaping on property


What does a typical volunteer shift look like?

-Report to the sanctuary and sign in, the list of duties will be posted in the sign in area

 -Habitat maintenance: clearing old food, checking water supply,

cleaning animal waste from habitat.

-Feeding animals - Please keep in mind, some reptiles/amphibians are carnivores,

the food consists of live insects, and other small animals (frozen)

-Habitat construction: preparing and building habitats for the animals to as needed

-Time permitting, animal interactions; interacting with the animals for the benefit of socialization

-Sign out when all tasks are complete to record your hours


We make every effort to honor requests of volunteers to work with specific animals,

however the needs of the sanctuary will be put first and requests can not be guaranteed.

Once your application is received, a team member will call you for a phone interview.

From there all new volunteers will attend a mandatory training session.
